In his address at the ‘Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation Ministerial’ held on September 23, 2024 at the sidelines of UN General Assembly, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the Atlantic Ocean’s critical importance to global nations, particularly in supporting fisheries, trade, and biodiversity. He acknowledged the significant environmental challenges facing the ocean, such as warming waters and declining fish stocks, which threaten livelihoods.

The partnership, initiated last September with 32 countries and now expanded to 42, aims to foster collaboration across governments, civil societies, and private sectors to address these issues.

Blinken highlighted innovative strategies, including the use of autonomous underwater vehicles to monitor ocean acidity and programs like debt-for-nature swaps to encourage marine conservation. He also addressed the problem of ghost gear in the oceans, citing initiatives like Costa Rica’s recycling efforts.

Looking ahead, Blinken stressed the unprecedented challenges the partnership faces, underscoring the necessity for collective action to ensure the ocean’s health for future generations. He expressed gratitude for the commitment of member nations and reinforced the importance of continued collaboration.
